Hardwoods VS Softwoods; Best Wood for Chainsaw Carving Art; Sustainable Softwood & Harvested

If you are looking into getting a one of a kind, unique piece of art, chainsaw carvings are a great place to look. Clark the Carver, our artist at Carve Me A Bear! Chainsaw Carvings uses modified Stihl chainsaws as his main tool to cut down and whittle a large piece of wood, and carve a shape that will turn into a bear or some other remarkable character. Clark needs to be sure that his tools are always up to par and top of the line to ensure his carvings meet his high standards. Chainsaw artists like Clark also need to be sure that they are using the right kind of wood. It can make or break the outcome of the project if the wrong tools and wood are used. The hardness of the wood is a huge indicator on how well the project will end up!

Hardwood VS Softwood Cuttings

You may think that the best type of wood to use is a hardwood but on the contrary the best kind of wood to use is a softwood. The wood cuts better and is less likely to break off in large pieces. The hardness of the woods is determined by the type of tree that is used. There is a test that can be done called the “Brinell Hardness Test” that uses a steel ball that is about a half an inch and is pushed into the wood. The amount of pressure that is necessary will determine the hardness of the wood. An experienced wood carver will know what wood is best for them and their particular style of chainsaw art! Softwood Chainsaw Carvings

Clark The Carver prefers softwood for his chainsaw carvings. Softwoods work best with chainsaws and carvings because of way they yield to creative impulses with little kickback, though their knots can be tricky to maneuver at times. Softwood give a fantastic finished product. Some of the woods that fall into this category are Pine, Cottonwood, Redwood and Ponderosa. The cottonwood tree grows abundantly and are a great tree to use for carving. They are a good thick base and have great bark that is also good to use in decorating and other types of whittling and carving. Western Red Cedar and Redwood hold up well to weather and are naturally bug and decay resistant. All of Clark’s sculptures and chainsaw art are made from sustainable softwood timber he obtains from tree service companies as well as harvested wood from naturally downed, storm damaged trees. These are then treated with exterior wood stains, varnishes and lacquers to give long lasting protection in the great outdoors … or indoors (many of our customers feel our artwork is just to nice to keep outside). Some of the hardwoods that are used for carving include Cherry and Maple oak. Hardwoods are more difficult to obtain but Clark will use them when these woods are available and specially requested.
