Bears are beautiful animals that roam free in the wild. There are a few different types of bears. Let’s talk about these different types of bears and see if a bear is what you want your wood carving from Carve Me A Bear! Chainsaw Carvings to be.
Black Bear
Black bears are the smallest of the bears they live in most of the United States, all of Canada, and even some parts of Mexico. Typically, you will find black bears in large forest areas or mountain terrain. Black bears are probably the timidest out of all the bears. This could be because of their size. But they are known to attack if provoked. These bears can see and hear so much better than humans. Their sense of smell can range 20 miles. Bears are plantigrade. This means that they walk on all fours but they can also stand up as humans do. When they stand they are 5 to 7 feet tall. Their lifespan is about 18 years. Black bear size can vary depending on region, food source, sex, age, and health. They can range between 90 to 875 pounds. But when a cub is born they are half to 1 pound. Their mom will stay with the Cubs in the den until April by then they are about 10 lbs. Cubs stay with their mother until about 17 months.
Brown Bear
Brown bears (also known as grizzly bears) can be found all over the world but in the United States, they are in Alaska with some Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Washington. Grizzlies have a bigger range of where they live. They will live in meadows, mountains, valleys, coastal regions, and forests. Male grizzlies have larger regions than females. Brown bears live 20 to 25 years. These bears average between 500 to 1200 pounds. When they stand upright they can be over 8 feet tall. If the bear is living on the coast their diet consists of a lot of salmon whereas most of the other grizzly bears eat a lot of plant food and also elk, deer, or even bison. Bears mainly live solitary but are not territorial. They are okay being with other bears when it is a source of food like salmon in Alaska. When it comes to being in groups for food the hierarchy gets first choice, then a female with cubs, then single adults, and then it gets down to the weakest and youngest.
Polar Bear
These bears like the cold they live in the Arctic and the areas around it. You can find them in Alaska, Canada, Russia, Norway, and Greenland. Because they live where there is so much ice their home range is a lot larger than other bears. They also need to go where the food is so that means they go where the seals are. They can smell a seal up to a mile away or even one that is buried under the snow 3 feet. Polar bears’ feet are about 12 inches wide and are webbed so they can swim better. they are covered in small bumps so that they can run better on the ice. They can live up to 25 years and weigh as much as 1600 pounds depending if it is a male or female. They weigh 330 -1600 pounds and can stand between 6 and 10 feet tall. Because they are made for the cold they can overheat if the temperature gets above 50°. Unless it is a pregnant female, polar bears do not hibernate.
