Nothing will add character and intrigue to your property like a chainsaw carving. If you have cut down a tree in your yard recently, you might not want to get rid of the stump it left behind. That stump might be able to be transformed into art. There are a few factors that can play a role in whether or not your stump is a good candidate for a chainsaw carving that should always be considered. Carve Me A Bear! Chainsaw Carvings is here to talk about some of the deciding factors that helps us understand whether or not your tree stump is a candidate for a chainsaw carving.
The Tree Species Matters
Not all tree species are going to have the same durability. This is why it is so important to consider the tree species before beginning any chainsaw carving in a stump. When you’re investing in a chainsaw carving, you want to know that it will last. Some trees like horse chestnut, spruce, birch or alder will only last a few years before they start to decay and breakdown. You want a harder wood like a black locust or walnut that will last up to 20 years before it starts to break down.
Consider the Size of the Stump
Another huge consideration is the size of the tree stump you want carved. If the tree stump isn’t large enough, there simply isn’t enough timber to work with for the carving. It needs to be at least 12” in diameter or have a circumference of at least 39.” If you aren’t working with a large tree stump, there is a chance that the artist will turn you down because there wouldn’t be enough timber to make the carving stable. It is helpful to measure the tree before reaching out to an artist so that you can give them an idea of the size of the tree they would be working with.
Other Factors to Consider
There are a few other factors that need to be considered when it comes to carving a tree stump.
– Branch Wounds: If there are branch wounds on the tree stump, there is likely going to be decay inside the stump. This makes is not a good candidate for a carving.
– Debris: Sometimes, a tree stump that has been left in the weather for a long time can become covered in mud and other debris. This can give you a false impression that it is a great candidate for a chainsaw carving. There has to be enough good wood under all the gunk to be able to carve it though.
