Is My Tree Stump Best for a Chainsaw Carving? Tree Species, Size, Branch Wounds & More

If you have an old tree on your property and you don’t know what to do with it, you might want to consider turning it into a piece of art. Chainsaw carvings are one way to make create a unique piece of art using the old tree stumps found on your property. However, not all old tree stumps make a good candidate for a chainsaw carving. Carve Me a Bear! Chainsaw Carving is here to talk about what trees make good candidates for chainsaw carvings and what can eliminate a tree stump from being suitable for this type of art.

Species of Tree

One of the first things that is considered when someone wants their tree stump carved is the species. Some tree species will be longer lasting as a carving than others. For instance, a black locust oak, walnut, sweet chestnut, elm and sequoia all make good carvings since these species are extremely hard woods. Species that struggle with durability include sycamore, spruce, birch, and alder, to name a few.

Size of Tree Stump

Another determining factor is the size of the stump you have. If the stump is too small, there is simply not enough tree to create a carving. The stump usually needs to be at least 12” diameter or 39” circumference. It can be hard to gauge the size of the stump if you don’t know what you’re doing. It is always best to have a consultation with the artist to ensure the stump is large enough for what you’re wanting.

Tree Branch Wounds

When your tree stump has signs that there are branch wounds from when the tree was alive, it can mean that your tree isn’t a good candidate. When there are signs off branch wounds, it can lead to internal decay which makes stump carving impossible. Branch wounds can also mean that the carving isn’t going to be durable.

What if Your Stump isn’t Suitable for a Carving?

If after a consultation with the chainsaw artist you find that your stump isn’t a suitable one for a carving, this doesn’t mean that you won’t ever be able to enjoy the beauty of a chainsaw carving on your property. When this happens, it is possible to have a chainsaw carving created from a different piece of wood and then have it mounted on the stump on your property. This can be a way to enjoy these beautiful works of art even when you don’t have the stump for it.
