In law enforcement, it isn’t always just people that serve. Often, horses and dogs are used in the effort to prevent criminals from further destruction and terror. These furry heroes are frequently forgotten when they selflessly give their lives courageously in the line of duty. Sometimes the media will report on an especially tragic story, in effort to remind the citizens that man’s best friend, or in these cases partners against crime, are more than just brown-eyed adorable face. These K9 counterparts are just as valuable as the officers that care for them. Through their hard work and training, the K9’s serving in local police departments, law enforcement groups and military factions, are fighting the good fight to keep the innocent and law abiding citizens safe from the minds that inflict harm.

Appreciation of K9 Officer Nicky’s Selfless Service to the Residents of Las Vegas, NV
On February 12, 2016, it was reported that the valiant and courageous K-9 officer Nicky repeatedly took stabs and cuts to the face with a machete from an armed assailant. After many dog enthusiasts, police officer supporters and fellow LVPD officers heard the tragic news, prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery where offered to the brave K9 officer, Nicky. After recovering from his vicious attacker, he was eager to get back to work, and to protect and serve. But alas, Nicky would tragically fall to fatal gun shots on March 31, 2016 in an effort to apprehend a soulless gunman. The gunman was reportedly firing wildly into a residential neighborhood. Nicky, an 8 year old Belgian Malinois and his heroic partner, Sergeant Eric Kerns were quick to respond in an effort to contain the event before innocent lives were lost. When Nicky and Kerns were confronted by the gunman, a rapid exchange of fire took place. When the smoke had faded, and the incident dissolved, Nicky would be found, unable to survive the multiple gunshots. He laid there, a fallen hero, doing what he loved until the bitter end. Nicky was enthusiastic about keeping communities safe, and protecting the locals.

Chainsaw Carvings and Derfelt Senior Center are proud to present a memorial chainsaw carving statue of a Belgian Malinois to Nicky’s handler, Las Vegas Police Sergeant Eric Kerns and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). Clark, the master behind Carve Me A Bear! Chainsaw Carvings, and Derfelt Senior Center knew they needed to honor this K9 officer who was deeply respected and cherished among so many. In appreciation for Nicky’s selfless service, Clark, from Carve Me A Bear! Chainsaw Carvings, custom designed and crafted a chainsaw memorial statue of Nicky, a Belgian Malinois and later this week will proudly present it to Nicky’s handler and partner, Sergeant Kerns.
