Endangered Species of Sea Turtles
Sea turtles have been around for a very long time; with the oldest fossil dating back approximately 150 million years ago making them one of Earth’s oldest surviving animals. To understand the extraordinary fact, consider that dinosaurs have been extinct for 65 million years. There are seven species of sea turtles, six of which are endangered or threatened to be endangered at the hand of mankind. Six of these sea turtle species green, hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley, leatherback, loggerhead, and the olive ridley can be found in warm and cool waters around the world while flatbacks are found only around Australia. Natural explorers, sea turtles travel the oceans. Leatherback sea turtles for example, travel an average of 10,000 miles a year in their adventures.
Sea Turtle Life Cycle
However, when the females are ready to lay their eggs, they will return to the nesting grounds from which they were born. Since males do not have to return to land to be a part of the reproduction process, they will spend the majority of their lives in the ocean. Females will lay approximately 150 eggs, which look very similar to ping-pong balls, every 2 to 3 years. Within a couple of short months, the hatchlings emerge and return to the ocean. Unfortunately, it is estimated that only 1 hatching in a 1,000 will reach adulthood. Getting to the ocean once hatched proves to be a challenge for many and with the predators lurking on the open sea; these little ones lose their numbers rapidly in each generation. The sex of sea turtles is determined during incubation and the surrounding temperatures of the environment. Warmer temperatures produce females where cooler temperatures result in males.
Sea Turtle Facts; Diet, Holding Their Breath & More
Sea turtles can hold their breath for an extraordinary amount of time and stay under water for up to five hours, but when applying their feeding dives will only linger up to five minutes. Sea turtles live on average 80-100 years and even longer. Sea turtles grow every year they are alive; for example the leatherback sea turtle can weigh up 2,000 pounds. Their diet depends on the species of sea turtle; sea grasses, jellyfish and soft-bodies animals, crabs, clams, and other hard-shelled animals, sponges and invertebrates are included.
