Do you ever wonder why animals do what they do? Why do bears get in the river and catch salmon? Why do they climb trees to eat honey? Animals can do some amazing things and also have very strange behaviors. Carve Me A Bear! Chainsaw Carvings is here to help you learn a little bit more about why bears do what they do.
What is a Bears Favorite Food?
Depending on the type of bear and the region that they live in, this will determine the type of food that they mainly eat. A polar bear will have a different diet than a brown or black bear. The brown bear has a very wide variety of foods that they will eat. They will eat flowers, fruit, seeds, insects, small vertebrates, fish, and even larger animals. Sometimes it can be hard for them to run in an environment that is full of vegetation to hunt for food. So, they will rely on other sources of food than just meat.
Is Salmon the Food Brown Bears like the Most?
You will often see pictures of brown bears in a river catching fish. These fish are most likely salmon. Brown bears that live in the area of coastal Alaska or other regions will have their diet consist mostly of salmon. Grizzly bears vast majority of their diet is salmon. In this region, brown bears will eat 60% salmon whereas in other areas brown bears hardly eat fish. A male brown bear can consume 2800 kilograms of salmon a year. The Bears that eat salmon are much larger than the bears that eat fruits and vegetables.
Why Do Brown Bears Eat Salmon?
Salmon migrate upstream, they start in the ocean and head upstream to the mountain rivers. This is where they will lay their eggs. When they are on their journey this is when the bears will find them for food. Animals will eat food that will give them the most calories with the least amount of hunting for the source. Hunting for salmon is very easy for bears during salmon migration. A comparison, 100 grams of salmon will give them 146 calories for the same number of strawberries it will only give them 33 cal. This is why in this region you will find bears eating more salmon than any other bears.
Do All Bears Love Honey?
This is also why bears love honey. It gives them sugar and energy with minimal effort of getting the food. Bears don’t eat just the honey they will eat the bees and the larva which gives them a good source of protein. Don’t worry, it’s hard for bears to get stung because of their thick fur and they have a high tolerance for toxins that can help them be more resilient from pain. You may find more black bears eating honey because they can climb trees to get to the beehives.
