Chainsaw Bear Carvings; Types of Bears Found Around the World Part 1; North American Black & Spirit, Brown, Polar & Asiatic Black Bear

One of the most common requests that Clark The Carver gets for his chainsaw art are bears which is just fine with him! You see, part of Clark the Carver’s family is Little Shell Chippewa/Chippewa Cree. In honor of Chief Little Bear, who was instrumental in gaining tribal recognition on the Flathead reservation of Montana, carving bears is dear to Clark’s heart and one of his specialties. Honey bears, cowboy bears, bear benches, mantels and lamps are just a few of the bear inspired items we offer at Carve Me A Bear! Chainsaw Carvings.

Types of Bears Found Across the World

Bears are amazing creatures that come in many shapes, sizes and colors. They are also often used in fictional cartoons and movies to show a fun loving or silly character. There are only eight different species of bears found in the world and this blog looks at four of them.

Carve Me A Bear! Chainsaw Carving Lists Four of the Eight Species of Bears Found Around The World

North American Black Bear: The black bear is the most common bear found in North America. They are found in many different regions and the name may suggest that they are all black. The interesting thing about the North American Black Bear is that they are not all black but can also be brown, a bluish black color and even white. The most common color is obviously black with the least common being white. The white color is also called a Spirit Bear. This bear is an omnivore and has a diet that consists of vegetables that are found in the area they are living. This awesome bear can reach up to 600 pounds when the males are full grown. They are a fascinating creature to study and have a lifespan of about 25 years. They are cool but much better to see depicted in a carving rather than in the wild!
Brown Bear: This is a bear that is found in some areas in the United States such as Montana and Washington but more often in Alaska. They are also found in other areas of the world like Canada and Russia. The populations of brown bears are scattered around and they can all vary in size and color. There are some that are nearly black and many shades of brown down to a blonde color. The size of the brown bear will be different depending on where they are living. Some of the largest bears are found in Alaska and Russia. They have been known to reach up to 1500 pounds! These extremely large bears are not found very often and the size is dependent on the food sources that are available in the area.
Polar Bear: The polar bear is one of the largest species of bears that is found in the world. They are not as abundant and are found in the Arctic. One of the most interesting facts about the polar bear is that they look white in color but the skin of the bear is actually black. The fur on the bear is transparent which will reflect the color of their surroundings which happens to be snow. They are a carnivore and feed mainly on seals they find coming up between the ice.
Asiatic Black Bear: The Asiatic Black Bear has some characteristics that set it apart from other black bears. They have their well-known long neck and larger ears that make it easy to identify. They are found in Eastern Asia and also have a white patch on their chest. These bears will eat meat such as mammals, birds, and fish but will also feed often on berries and grass. Depending on the area they live some will hibernate in the winter while other areas are good enough weather that they don’t.
